Early Jan 2011 news

Straight into the new year and there's already lots of info to be had.  As you might expect most of it is portable or PC related, which is where tactics games have found their new home.

Magic: The Gathering Tactics launch date announced: Jan 18, 2011

Screenshots of Sakura Wars Online browser game, which features online co-op.  It looks to be using a grid based system instead of the free range system found in other Sakura Wars games and Valkyria Chronicles.

Economic game theory article.  I always find these interesting as carefully designed game experiments can tell us a lot about human behavior.  Game theory also helps legitimize technical and scientific analysis of game rules and player skill, which is something sorely lacking in just about any video game review you'll come across.

New 3DS games announced via Nintendo's comprehensive list.  A new 3DS Daisenryaku title and an Imageepoch SRPG were both revealed.  No details yet.

SRPG 101 article and comprehensive game list have both been updated.

So MTG:Tactics came out late today and I've played through all the free single-player material. It's pretty awful, everything's a bit generic and there are certainly balance issues. I'm not sure if I'd even consider playing any further and I'm a Magic fan, so I can't imagine why anyone else would... It's a real shame, since I love both tactics games and Magic so much and this could've been something amazing, yet what was released is super-buggy and incredibly bland gameplay.

That's disappointing, Arthur. Always have to be cautious of development studios that have never made a tactics game before.

Interestingly enough though, I've been enticed to play another SOE product, PoxNora. I don't know if you know of it already, but it's a multiplayer tactics game which works on a trading card basis. So there are micropayments for decks etc., and you can create an artificial advantage just by paying for it, but only up to a point. It's actually quite fun, and though the card thing might turn off hardcore tactics fans (ie. you :P), it's surprisingly deep. There are very few random elements (no critical hits or anything, everything's laid out in front of you), so it is quite skill-intensive. Maybe give the free trial a run, there have been many editions however so the variables to keep track of are pretty insane, and you really need to know a lot of the cards before you get better at it.
