E3 2011 Tactics News!

Atlus announced Devil Survivor 2 (DS) for a 2012 NA release. The original Devil Survivor was pretty well received so it's not a big surprise they're translating the sequel.

I know there are some indie games on the show floor like Skulls of the Shogun, which is shaping up to be a fun and accessible tactics game.

As far as news, though, that's about it. The biggest news is that Fire Emblem 3 DS and other potential titles weren't announced for NA release. That means you should start brushing up on your Japanese if you want to play them. It's really not that hard to get down some kanji so you can navigate the menus and such. The DS is region free so enjoy that while it lasts, because the 3DS isn't. On the other hand both the PSP and PS Vita are region free.

Speaking of PS Vita, I'm sure there are some tactics games in the works, but nothing has been announced yet. You'll see more PS Vita announcements as the year goes by and Tokyo Games Show 2011 takes place.

You are right. It isn't that difficult to play menu driven games like tbs /srpg games on memorziation of menues alone.

Still I want to enjoy the story and know exactly whats going on. I know that is a very greedy opinion especially considering that I still didn't import R-Type Tactics 2 PSP or La Pucelle PSP where the story for the first will be pretty irrelevant and cheesy standard (methinks) and the latter one I even finished on the US PS2 versionsome years ago so I ought to know whats happening.

I still didn't play many of the old fire emblems because not all of them are have a finished and polished fan-translation-patch like FE 6 for the GBA. Well I still hope the rumours of IREM publishing R-Type Tactics as a PSN-only Version in NA are true and hope for PSN only releases for the other ones as well but the chances are relatively small. Even with that few lines of dialogue in R-Type tactics 2 we still are speaking of irem which isn't a company known for growing money on trees like Square, Bioware, etc....

Irem did file a trademark for R-Type Command 2, but they haven't made any official announcement. They may have given up on it by now. In any case, you can get a lot of older import tactics games for cheap from ebay these days, so if you missed out you can still grab them.

As far as older Fire Emblems, I'd say only 4 and 5 are worth playing through, so you're not missing much.

While there are more tactics games being produced in recent years than before, a lot of the best ones remain in Japanese only. But if you don't mind gaming on your PC/netbook or iPhone, there are quite a few good choices in English. Most PC tactics games are extremely light on system requirements, you can pretty much run any of them on a notebook.
